Library News

New in the MWPC Library are five noteworthy books and one very moving DVD:

Jesus, A Revolutionary Biography, by John Dominic Crossnan, is a book that “achieves a portrait that both takes in the contemporary background yet accounts for Jesus’ distinctiveness.”  “The book and its subjects are rebels in the cause of truth.”

Henri Nouwen, in The Return of the Prodigal Son, has written a book which tells how “the challenge to love as a father and be loved as the son will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and here represented with vigor and power fresh for our times.”

My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor is a brain scientist’s personal journey through and beyond a debilitating “brain injury.” In her description of the “mapping of the physiology of compassion,” which helped her more than mere sympathy, the author tells us about the “wonder of being human.”

The Shack, by Wm. Paul Young, “wrestles with the timeless question: Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” The answers found in this book are astounding and transforming, not only for the characters, but possibly for the reader as well.

The Linn family, Dennis, Sheila and Matthew, in a book that looks like it belongs in the children’s section of the library, presents a spiritual retreat in book form with a theme called “the examen.”    In Sleeping with Bread, the examen helps the reader focus on two questions which help him or her to hear the voice of God guiding them from within.  Don’t skip the introduction - it’s hilarious.

A moving DVD version of The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch is the gift from
a very talented young computer professor, who had been given a diagnosis of terminal cancer.  The lecture he subsequently gave “was not one about dying however, but about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment. It was about living.”

New Members

New Member Classes
Three times each year, we offer classes to those interested in joining our congregation.  These classes are designed to help you learn about our programs, congregation, and Presbyterian heritage.  You may become a member of our church by confession or reaffirmation of your faith in Jesus Christ, or by letter of transfer from another church where you were active in the past.  The teaching team consists of church members, ministry team leaders, and pastors.

In the fall and in the spring, these classes are offered on four consecutive Sunday mornings, during the 9:30 worship hour.  Prospective members then meet with our Session over a meal, and are welcomed into our congregation on the following Sunday morning.  In the summer, we truncate the four sessions into one long Saturday morning, concluding with a luncheon with Session
members.

Call the church office (513-231-2650) for more information.

Presbyterian Men's Group: Men's Discovery

The Men’s Discovery Group gathers each Saturday morning at
the church for coffee, donuts, and lively discussions. We generally
have 10-15 attendees each week. Topics include faith, religion,
personal relationships, social and moral issues, science, history,
current events and politics, to name just a few! We are a diverse
group with a broad range of interests.

Beyond our personal and intellectual interests, we:

  • Deeply care about each other
  • Value, honor and support each other
  • Respect each other’s faith and commitment
  • Accept the validity of each one’s opinions
  • Share commitment to individual growth
  • Act in service to God, our church and community

All men (whether members of MWPC or not) are welcome to
attend. We meet each week at 7:30 am in the church on the
2nd floor over the Chapel. Our discussions conclude by 9:00 am.
Feel free to join us any time. If you have any questions, please
email us at mensdiscovery@mwpc-church.org

Bible Study

Journey Home Bible Study is a small group of committed
believers who meet once a week on Thursday evening to
explore God’s Word and to encourage and affirm each other
in our walk of faith. We use selected materials and guided
discussion to seek understanding of God’s will and purpose for
our lives as revealed in scripture. We alternate between Old
and New Testament studies and make an effort to both
appreciate the history and culture that shaped the original
writing of the scripture and to apply its truth to our everyday
living. We meet at 7:00 pm for a time of fellowship with dessert
and coffee, followed by an hour of study, prayer, and reflection.
We are at this time at full capacity, but welcome drop-ins and
are happy to provide encouragement and advice for others
who are interested in in-home Bible study.
