Stephen Ministers
“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way
you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
– Galatians 6:2
Stephen Ministers care for people facing difficult and trying
times in their lives. They are lay people who have received
extensive training to provide emotional and spiritual care,
both within and outside the MWPC congregation. Stephen Ministers meet on a regular basis with their care
receivers to walk with them through their difficult times.
Confidentiality is paramount; Stephen Ministers maintain
absolute privacy for their care receivers. They regularly attend
peer supervision sessions to ensure they are providing
competent, compassionate support for their care receivers. Stephen Ministers are well-trained listeners and spiritual
companions; they are not licensed therapists and counselors.
Stephen Ministers serve as an extension of the MWPC
Pastoral staff. Some of the areas in which Stephen Ministers offer
care and help to individuals in need are . . .
- Suffering illness
- Bereaved
- Recently separated or divorced
- In a job crisis
- New members of the church
- Disabled
- Homebound
- Lonely
- In a spiritual crisis
- Looking for a caring, Christian friend

Christ Care In Stitches
In Stitches is a ChristCare group, which has been active since 2005. ChristCare is a branch of the Stephen Ministry, offering Christian care and support through small group settings In Stitches formed around the common calling to live out Christ’s love for one another and those in need through prayer and action. Our action is creating items for others, be it by knitting, crocheting or some other type of needlework.
In Stitches’ first project was making sweaters for the Guideposts Magazine Knit for Kids project. In response to needs expressed by our congregations, we began making prayer shawls for those in need of comfort and caring during difficult times. We also make helmet liners for those in the military and baby caps for preemies and newborns at local hospitals. We support our local Presbyterian Women by filling baskets with handcrafted items for sale at their annual Artisans’ Affair. We also teach knitting to children in our Super Wednesday program.
Experienced knitters and crocheters are always welcome, and we teach these crafts to those who are interested. We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday evenings in Beran Parlor from 7:00-8:30PM.
